Getting your business online isn’t difficult, but sometimes it seems that everyone in the online world is speaking another language. But many of these internet terms, or ‘jargon’, aren’t as complex as they first seem. Once you’re able to understand these terms you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to get online.
Website hits and traffic
A website ‘hit’ is the term used to describe a visitor to your site, one visitor = one website hit. ‘Traffic’ on the other hand is used to describe the total number of hits. So a rise in individual hits would lead to a spike in traffic.
Blog
Blog is a Portmanteau of ‘web log’. Initially blogs were used like an online diary but now they are much more often used as a platform to share news, opinions and insight on relevant topics.
Navigation
Navigation is a description of how users get around your site. Typically sites feature a navigation bar that will enable visitors to reach different parts of the site. E.g. store, contact details and blog.
Browser
This is a piece of software needed to access the internet. No doubt you’re reading this article on one right now. Services like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari are your gateway to the online world.
eCommerce
eCommerce refers to all transactions undertaken online. Generally this takes the form of products being purchased on a website with payment taken directly online via credit card or other services such as PayPal.
Domain
The domain is what users would type into a browser to find your website. It’s totally unique to your page and is made up of letters, numbers and hyphens. There are two parts to the domain, the text describing the site ‘e.g. ‘marksmusicshop’ and then an extension which is typically a .com but could be a .net, .tv or a range of others.
